Hyderabad: A fresh cold wave has tightened its grip across Telangana, with night and early-morning temperatures dipping sharply across most districts and bringing unusually cold conditions even for mid-December.

Data showed minimum temperatures falling 2°C to 4°C below normal across large parts of the state, with several districts reporting single-digit lows.

The Adilabad and KB Asifabad district administrations, meanwhile, changed school timings to help students beat the cold. Schools will begin at 9.40 am instead of 9 am and continue till 4.30 pm instead of the earlier 4.15 pm.

Kohir in Sangareddy district was the coldest at 6.1°C, followed by Sirpur (U) in Kumuram Bheem district at 6.3°C, Moinabad in Rangareddy at 6.8°C, and Nawabpet in Vikarabad at 6.9°C.

Several north and west Telangana districts reported minimums well below their seasonal normals. The minimum at Narayanpet was 4.6°C below normal and Vikarabad minus 4.1°C. Wanaparthy, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Jogulamba Gadwal and Maabubabad each were colder by up to 3.6°C than normal.

In the Greater Hyderabad region, Serilingampally recorded a minimum of 7.8°C, the lowest, followed by Malkajgiri at 8.3°C and Rajendranagar at 9.1°C. Core city areas remained relatively warm, with Charminar at 15.1°C, Amberpet at 15.4°C, Saroornagar at 15.5°C, and Sanathnagar at 16.1°C.

The district-wide minimum temperature for Hyderabad stood at 11.1°C, recorded at West Maredpally, which is 2.1°C below normal for this time of year. Medchal–Malkajgiri district recorded a minimum of 8.3°C, while Rangareddy district dipped to 6.8°C.

Statewide, the average minimum temperature was 11.9°C, against a normal of 14.6°C, an overall departure of minus 2.7°C. Weather officials attribute the sharp drop to dry northerly winds, clear night skies, and strong radiational cooling, conditions that typically intensify cold wave spells during December.

Forecasts for the next 2 to 3 days indicate that cold conditions are likely to persist, with minimum temperatures expected to remain in the 6°C to 10°C range across several northern and western districts, while Hyderabad and surrounding districts may continue to record lows between 9°C and 12°C during early morning hours.
