Hyderabad: A 22-year-old final-year MBBS student, P Anitha, has appealed for financial assistance from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund for treatment of her advanced B-cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (ALL).

Speaking to Deccan Chronicle on Thursday, Anitha, who is resting at her home in Mahbubnagar, said her family was struggling to meet the high cost of treatment. She hails from a middle-class background; her parents are farmers, her elder sister is married and her younger brother is studying in Class 10.

Anitha said she studied in private schools until Class 5 and later continued her education in government educational institutions. She secured a medical seat through merit, without financial support from her parents, who later sold their land to support her studies.

She was diagnosed with B-cell ALL in 2024 after experiencing anxiety and breathing problems. Over the past two years, her treatment, including a bone marrow transplant, has cost nearly Rs 50 lakh, Anitha stated. She suffered a relapse in December and was currently undergoing chemotherapy at home.

Anitha said she had applied for assistance from the CM Relief Fund earlier, but has not received any support so far. “We have received around Rs 19 lakh already after paediatrician Dr Sivaranjani Santosh posted about my plight on her Instagram account. I still need about Rs 30 lakh for further treatment. I am not asking for more. I get cured, I can serve the public with my doctor’s degree,” she said.
