HYDERABAD: A silent revolution is sweeping the country under the leadership of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, with people increasingly looking for an alternative to the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, irrigation minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy said on Monday.

Addressing the annual Rajiv Gandhi Sadbhavana Yatra Commemoration Day and Rajiv Sadbhavana Award function at Charminar, Uttam Kumar Reddy expressed the confidence that growing public support for Rahul Gandhi and the Congress reflected a wider desire for political change at the national level. He called upon Congress workers to stand firmly behind Rahul Gandhi in the struggle to defeat the BJP and strengthen the forces of secularism, democracy and national unity.

The programme, organised annually since 1990 to commemorate former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi’s message of communal harmony and national integration, also highlighted his contributions to technological advancement, democratic decentralisation, youth empowerment and peace-building.

Uttam Kumar Reddy said Rahul Gandhi had provided effective leadership to the Congress through challenging political circumstances as well as favourable periods. The growing participation of people in Congress programmes across the country, he said, indicated that a silent political transformation was gathering momentum.

Recalling Rajiv Gandhi’s association with Hyderabad through the Sadbhavana Yatra, Uttam Kumar Reddy congratulated former PCC president and government adviser V. Hanumantha Rao and the Rajiv Sadbhavana Award Committee for maintaining the tradition for more than three decades. He said he had regularly attended the programme irrespective of the position he held.

Dr C. Mallikarjuna, chief consultant urologist of the Asian Institute of Nephrology and Urology, was honoured in recognition of his service to society.

Present at the event were Congress MP M. Anil Kumar Yadav, former minister J. Geetha Reddy, PCC president Mahesh Kumar Goud, Hanumantha Rao, Hyderabad DCC president Syed Khalid Saifullah, former MP M. Anjan Kumar Yadav and senior party leader Mohammed Feroz Khan.
