HYDERABAD: A notorious offender who posed as a woman on social media and honey‑trapped victims not only from India but also from Dubai, Pakistan, Turkey and Canada was arrested by a special team from Charminar zone on Sunday. Kondabhattula Pavan Kumar, the accused, is a resident of Balajinagar, Kukatpally, and native of Kothagudem district.

According to DCP Charminar Kiran Khare, Pavan operated 34 fake social media accounts under women’s names, interacted with over 1,000 people, and sent nude videos and pictures of other women to 82 victims, including a government officer from Telangana. Victims were also traced to Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Punjab, and overseas locations. He extorted ₹24.16 lakh.

Police sources said Pavan targeted doctors, businessmen, lecturers, private employees, delivery boys, gig drivers and even a woman police officer. His modus operandi was to create fake Facebook and Instagram accounts using stolen identities, send friend requests, initiate chats posing as a woman, and gradually shift to sexual conversations. He then sent nude photographs of other women and demanded similar content from victims.

Later, he introduced himself as the ‘brother’ of the fake account holder, contacted victims directly through calls, WhatsApp and social media, met some in person, and threatened to post their nude content online to extort money.

Investigators found that Pavan used photographs of a girl named Chandana from Kolkata to create 27 fake IDs. Two mobile phones, a laptop and a pen drive used in the crime were seized.

The case was detected by Saidabad police under the supervision of DCP Khare, and senior officials Prabhakar, Md. Majeed, Soma Venkat Reddy and station house officer B. Chandra Mohan.
