HYDERABAD: Amberpet came alive with colour, music and devotion as the Bathukamma festival was celebrated on a grand scale under the leadership of Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy. The highlight was a massive 72‑foot Bathukamma, which organisers said created a new record and earned the event a place in the Universal Book of Records.

Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla and the First Lady, state BJP president N. Ramchander Rao and leaders from different political parties joined the celebrations. Thousands of women, children and elders gathered around the towering floral arrangement, singing Bathukamma songs and taking part in the traditional festivities.

Addressing the gathering, Kishan Reddy described Bathukamma as a symbol of Telangana’s culture, traditions and self‑respect. He said the festival was not merely a floral celebration but an occasion for women to worship nature through songs, dance and community participation.

He noted that Bathukamma transcended distinctions of wealth, caste and social status, bringing people together in a shared celebration. The festival has long been observed in Telangana’s villages through folk songs.

The 72‑foot Bathukamma was arranged under the aegis of the Devi Foundation, which has been conducting the Amberpet celebrations for two decades. Foundation chairperson Neelima received the certificate from representatives of the Universal Book of Records.

Kishan Reddy said the festival also carried historical significance, recalling its association with the Telangana armed struggle against Nizam rule. He prayed to the Goddess for protection from natural calamities and for the health, happiness and prosperity of the people. Kishan Reddy also conveyed greetings to the people and expressed hope that Prime Minister Narendra Modi would continue to serve the nation in good health, extending welfare measures to the people.

Amberpet resounded with traditional Bathukamma songs as participants dressed in festive attire formed circles around the floral stacks. The fragrance of flowers, cultural performances and a large public turnout transformed the locality into a vibrant showcase of Telangana’s heritage.
