Farmers of Thanjavur district have appealed to the government to announce samba package so that farmers may take up samba cultivation without much difficulty.

Speaking at the monthly farmers' grievances day meeting at the collectorate on Friday, they said they could not take up kuruvai cultivation in canal-irrigated areas for want of water. Now, water is inadequate for samba, the long-term crop. So, samba cultivation is also in question. To help farmers, the government should announce samba package, they urged.
Moreover, Cauvery delta districts should be declared as drought-hit and relief should be provided.
Thanjavur Collector R. Revathi presided over the meeting. Some farmers undertook a gruel-drinking protest to highlight the plight of farmers.
They carried gruel pots on their heads, sat in front of the collectorate, and consumed the gruel.
Farmer Kakkarai Sukumar led the agitation.
