Chennai:Personnel of the Railway Protection Force (RPF), Chennai Division, recovered and returned a passenger’s misplaced bag containing gold jewellery and high-value electronics worth Rs 25 lakh at Chennai Egmore Railway Station on Monday.

The swift recovery was carried out under the nationwide initiative ‘Operation Amanat’, which focuses on tracking, securing, and restoring passengers’ left-behind belongings across the rail network.

The incident unfolded on October 26, when an anxious passenger lodged an urgent complaint via the RailMadad portal reporting that a bag had been inadvertently left behind onboard Train No. 22662, the Rameswaram – Chennai Egmore Superfast Express.

Acting on the digital alert, the on-duty RPF train escort team, comprising constable Sunil Kumar from Tindivanam and constable Chippymol from Korukkupet Goods, traced and secured the unattended luggage before any misplacement could occur.

Upon the train's scheduled arrival at Chennai Egmore, sub-inspector B. Gomathi and constable Anju received the coach and took formal custody of the belongings, following standard operating procedures. A joint inventory check revealed that the bag contained gold jewellery weighing 25 sovereigns and 6 grams, one laptop, and four wristwatches.

Following meticulous identity verification and the completion of official documentation, the bag and its entire contents were handed back intact to the rightful owner in the presence of the deputy station manager (commercial) at Chennai Egmore.

The passenger expressed gratitude to the Southern Railway administration and commended the dedication and integrity of the RPF personnel involved. Chennai Division appreciated the alertness of the team and reiterated its appeal to travelers to remain cautious with their baggage, encouraging the use of the RailMadad portal and the round-the-clock helpline 139 for swift assistance during transit.
