Chennai:A 26-year-old, third-year postgraduate Siddha medical student from Kumbakonam was found dead in her hostel room at the National Institute of Siddha in Tambaram on Thursday.

The deceased, identified as Chembagavalli, daughter of Tirupathi, was pursuing postgraduate Siddha medicine at the institute and was staying in the women’s hostel on the college campus.

According to the police, she was also preparing for Central government recruitment examinations. She was reportedly under stress over the difficulty of the question papers and was worried about her chances of clearing the examinations and securing a Central government job. However, the police are yet to establish whether examination-related anxiety had any role in her death.

On Thursday morning, her two roommates went out for a walk, leaving her alone in the room. When they returned, they found the room locked from inside. Despite knocking on the door and calling on her mobile phone, they received no response.

They alerted the hostel warden, following which the staff broke open the door and found Chembagavalli hanging.

The Tambaram police were informed and rushed to the spot. The body was recovered and sent to the Tambaram government hospital for post-mortem.

The police have registered a case and are investigating the circumstances surrounding her death.
