Chennai:The government is conducting a comprehensive review across universities to ascertain whether irregularities took place in the higher education department during the previous DMK regime, higher education minister Viswanathan said on Friday.

Speaking to reporters at Chennai airport before leaving for Thiruvananthapuram, he said details of any wrongdoing would be made public after the review was completed.

On the political situation in the state, he asserted that the TVK government would complete its full five-year term despite attempts by the DMK to destabilise it.

“The DMK’s sole objective is to bring down the government. When the government was formed, they predicted that it would collapse within a month and later changed their prediction to three months. Now, nearly six months have passed. The TVK government will continue to function with full strength, faith in democracy and good governance. It will complete its five-year term,” he stressed.

Responding to demands for a confidence vote every six months, he said it might be a practice of the DMK, but its intention was to prevent the TVK from governing the state.

He alleged that DMK leaders continued to behave as though they were still in power, forgetting that the TVK had won the election.

The minister said all Cabinet members and their aides were exercising utmost caution in their functioning. The government was closely monitoring every aspect of administration, including minor issues, to ensure clean and honest governance.

“People have placed enormous faith in us, and the Chief Minister has also reposed confidence in his ministers. We are working hard to provide clean and honest governance. Unlike in the past, we cannot afford to be complacent,” he said.

On the growing influence of social media, he said political parties and governments could no longer afford to ignore its impact.

Referring to growing cases of violence, Viswanathan said crimes must be dealt with firmly, irrespective of the government in power. The police were continuously monitoring the situation and criminal activities will be dealt with with an iron hand, he added.
