The distressed parent was noticed by RPF personnel Swathi, who was on patrol duty at the station: Reports
CHENNAI: A routine evening rush at Chennai Egmore railway station turned into a moment of panic for a family before ending in relief and gratitude, thanks to the alertness and quick response of Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel.
Five-year-old Darshana was separated from her parents on May 28 while passengers were boarding the Chennai Egmore–Kanyakumari Express from platform 5. Amid the crowd and commotion, the child went missing, leaving her mother frantically searching for her.
The distressed parent was noticed by RPF personnel Swathi, who was on patrol duty at the station. Realising the seriousness of the situation, she immediately alerted fellow RPF and Government Railway Police (GRP) personnel and launched a coordinated search operation.
Within minutes, the teams fanned out across the station, checking key locations and platforms. Their efforts paid off when the young girl was traced near the A2 coach of the same train. She was safely reunited with her parents, bringing an emotional end to the ordeal.
Witnesses said the reunion was marked by tears of joy and heartfelt thanks from the relieved parents, who expressed their gratitude to the railway security personnel for their prompt and compassionate assistance. The swift action also ensured that the train departed on schedule without any disruption.
The incident highlights the humanitarian role played by frontline railway security personnel. Beyond safeguarding passengers and railway property, the Chennai division RPF has been actively involved in rescuing vulnerable children. Under Operation Nanhe Fariste, the division rescued 630 runaway and missing children, 117 of them girls, during the 2025-26 financial year.
