IIT-M Launches Handbook to Help Parents Support Students’ Mental Well-Being
IIT -M Director Prof V Kamakoti said happiness was a collective responsibility and that the institute was continuously evolving methods to reduce stress among students
Ahead of World Suicide Prevention Day, Indian institute of Technology Madras (IIT- M) on Wednesday organised an interactive session for parents of its students to help them better understand and support their children’s emotional and mental well-being.
The online session, titled ‘PREM – Parents’ Role in Encouraging and Mentoring’, was conducted by Dr Yamini Kannapan, Senior Consultant Psychiatrist, Behavioural Science, Kauvery Hospital. It focused on effective communication, understanding students’ needs and helping them cope with academic and emotional pressures.
IIT -M Director Prof V Kamakoti said happiness was a collective responsibility and that the institute was continuously evolving methods to reduce stress among students. He said the PREM and SAFE initiatives were launched to strengthen support for students.
During the event, Prof Kamakoti also launched ‘SAFE – Building Psychological Safety for High-Achieving Students’, a handbook for parents authored by Dr Yamini Kannapan based on her experience of working with IIT- M students.
The handbook is based on the SAFE framework—Secure Base, Autonomy Support, Failure-Friendly Mindset and Early Recognition—and provides practical guidance to parents on creating an environment where students can openly discuss struggles and setbacks without fear of judgement.
The handbook is available on the website of the Office of Dean (Students), IIT- M.
