GCC Ramps Up Monsoon Readiness in North Chennai
In Royapuram zone, stormwater drain works have been taken up for 1.16 km, of which 474 metres have been completed and work is under way on another 413 metres. Desilting has been completed in 2,251 silt-catching chambers in the second phase, while works are continuing in the remaining locations
CHENNAI: The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has stepped up North Chennai’s monsoon preparations. A review meeting was chaired by Health Minister K.G. Arunraj on Wednesday in Thiru. Vi.Ka Nagar and Royapuram zones.
In Royapuram zone, stormwater drain works have been taken up for 1.16 km, of which 474 metres have been completed and work is under way on another 413 metres. Desilting has been completed in 2,251 silt-catching chambers in the second phase, while works are continuing in the remaining locations.
Of the 33 water bodies taken up for restoration in the zone, work has been completed in 26. The Corporation has kept pumps, earth-moving equipment and other machinery ready at five subways and flood-prone locations. Thirteen relief centres and two centralised kitchens have also been kept ready in Royapuram.
In Thiru.Vi. Ka. Nagar zone, 8.935 km of the 10.376-km storm-water drain works have been completed, with work continuing on 1.441 km. Of the 1.04-km canal improvement works, 910 metres have been completed.
The GCC has also completed desilting of 3,722 of the 8,258 silt-catching chambers in the zone, while work is under way in another 1,592. Desilting of stormwater drains has been completed for 61.60 km, with work continuing on another 5.99 km.
The Corporation has kept 51 motor pumps ready in low-lying areas in Thiru.Vi. Ka Nagar besides trucks, Bobcats, JCBs, tree-cutting machines and other equipment. Nineteen relief centres, 15 central kitchens and three kitchens for schoolchildren have also been readied.
The minister directed officials to intensify all precautionary measures on a war-footing and complete the works by September.
