Chennai: The work of fixing the symbols of candidates on the electronic voting machines commenced on Sunday for the Madurantakam by-poll which is scheduled for Oct. 6.

Chengalpet Collector M. Veerappan said a total of 52 booths are identified as sensitive and 37 among them are classified as very sensitive. The security arrangements had been strengthened in such booths, he added.

A total of 28 symbols for 27 candidates and NOTA are being fixed on the EVMs. The candidates and their agents are inspecting the work while the election officials are monitoring them.

So far, unaccounted cash of 15.9 lakh was seized by the flying squads. At present six flying squads are being deployed, and they would be increased to 12 to intensify the monitoring. CCTVs are fitted in all the polling booths, and 3,000 police personnel would be on duty including 1,300 personnel in the counting centres.
