Thanjavur: Former President of India Ramnath Kovind has called for excavating 1,008 Shivlings, which he said, got buried in the floods in Cauvery river in Nemam area near Thirukkattuppalli, 20 km from Thanjavur.

After participating in bhoomi puja for renovation of the Saptha Kanniyar Mahalathukala Pidari temple at Nemam village on Sunday, Mr Kovind said that King Perumpidugu Mutharaiyar Suvaran Maran, who ruled Nemam, used to wear the Vahai flower before going to war after worshipping Kala Pidariamman. He won 16 battles. He engraved his name and fame in epigraphs. He installed 1,008 Shivlings in that area for making it an auspicious land. Those lingas were buried when Cauvery was in spate. "People here should start the excavation of the lingas," he said.
He called upon Gen Z youth to emerge as good leaders to serve humanity. The 1,351th sadhaya vizha of the King was also celebrated on Sunday.
C. Ramesh, state minister for HR and CE, said that Mutharaiyar's history deals with valour and courage. Perumpidugu Muthaiyar Suvaran Maran used to wear Vahai flower before going to war. Normally the flower will be worn after winning the war. Wearing it before war showed his confidence, the minister said.
"That is why Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay included Vahai flower in the party's flag. He won the election and has come to power. The TVK government will extend all support to people of the area, " he said.
Suvaran Maran Pidari Trust organised the function. M. Chandrasekar, managing trustee of the trust, R.Vijay Saravanan, Thanjavur MLA, and R.V. Bharathan, state youth wing president of Mutharaiyar Sangam, participated.
