Pudukkottai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay held a roadshow for about 50 km between Tiruchy airport and Pudukkottai, where he participated in a government function.Earlier, Vijay offered prayers at the Murugan temple at Mathur on the Tiruchy-Pudukkottai national highway on way to Pudukkottai, along with his Cabinet colleagues Ramesh and Mohammed Parvez.
A large gathering of men, women and youths assembled on either side of the road and gave a rousing reception to the Chief Minister by sprinkling flowers and showering him with towels with TVK colours.
At Thodaimanallur, a large group of TVK volunteers forcibly entered the Chief Minister’s convoy, breaking the heavy police security. Following this, the Chief Minister’s van moved very slowly till the police removed the TVK volunteers.
There was some drama as the venue of the Chief Minister’s function was originally arranged at the armed reserve police ground with all arrangements but was shifted to the Collector's office complex Sunday night. One of the reasons stated was the threat of rain. Another reason was opposition from the DMK.
A group of DMK volunteers attempted to distribute sweets to the public near the new bus stand Sunday evening, stating that the bus stand was constructed during the previous DMK regime. Despite the police objecting to it, the DMK cadre continued to distribute the sweets. The police then seized the sweets from them. Reacting to this, the DMK cadre had heated arguments with the police and announced that they will distribute the sweets at the Chief Minister’s function on Monday. Official sources said that because of the DMK's proposed agitation by distributing sweets to the general public during the Chief Minister’s function and the threat of rain, the function venue has changed all of a sudden.
Further, tension prevailed for a while when a police personnel prevented the entry of government officials who came to attend the Chief Minister’s function. However, after heated arguments between them and the police, they were allowed into the function venue after a thorough check.
