CHENNAI: The Chennai Division of Southern Railway has intensified security and surveillance at major railway stations and on trains ahead of Deepawali, warning passengers against carrying firecrackers and other inflammable materials during the festive season.

The Railway Protection Force (RPF) has deployed additional personnel for crowd management, queue regulation and security checks at entry and exit points, platforms and other crowded areas. Intensive inspections are being conducted using explosive detection equipment and sniffer dogs to prevent the transportation of prohibited materials.

Carrying firecrackers and other dangerous articles on trains is punishable under the Railways Act, 1989. Violators may face imprisonment of up to three years, a fine exceeding Rs 1,000 or both, besides liability for any damage or injury caused.

Security has been strengthened at major stations, including Chennai Central, Egmore, Tambaram, Perambur, Chennai Beach, Mambalam and St. Thomas Mount. CCTV surveillance has also been intensified, while special teams have been deployed to prevent passenger-related crimes.

The RPF, in association with the Southern Railway cultural team, has conducted passenger awareness and cleanliness programmes at Chennai Central and Egmore, distributing pamphlets and educating passengers about fire hazards.

Passengers have been advised to report suspicious baggage or activities to the RPF, Government Railway Police or station authorities. They can also contact railway helpline 139 for assistance.

The division has appealed to passengers to carry only permitted luggage and follow safety regulations to ensure hassle-free festive travel. It warned that even a small spark in a crowded train could lead to a major fire, endangering lives.
