Chola-era Inscription Found at Vengikkal Lake in Tiruvannamalai District
The inscription was discovered by S. Balamurugan, Ko. Madhanmohan, C. Palanisamy, M. Bharathiraja, Iman, and Pandi of the Tiruvannamalai District Historical Research Centre.
Tiruvannamalai: A Chola-era inscription discovered at Vengikkal lake near Tiruvannamalai has been identified as belonging to the reign of Kulothunga Chola III from the 13th century, according to members of the Tiruvannamalai District Historical Research Centre.
The inscription was discovered by S. Balamurugan, Ko. Madhanmohan, C. Palanisamy, M. Bharathiraja, Iman, and Pandi of the Tiruvannamalai District Historical Research Centre. It is engraved on a stone slab about 7 feet high on the bank of the Vengikkal Periya Eri (Big Lake) near Tiruvannamalai. The inscription consists of 38 lines and belongs to the 13th century.
The inscription dates to the 20th regnal year of Kulothunga Chola III, corresponding to 1198 CE. It records that Prithivi Chola Gangan, son of Kuvalala Mudaiyan, donated land containing a flower garden on the southern bank of the Thirundigai river to Thiruvannamalai Udaiya Nayanar, the donated land being named Thiruvannamalai Perumal Nallur.
