Build Marudur-Umayalpuram Barrage Across Cauvery: Farmers Fed

Karur: The Cauvery Padugai Farmers Federation has appealed to Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay to construct a barrage with shutters and a two-lane road across river Cauvery from Marudur on the southern bank to Umayalpuram on the northern side.
Federation president S. Jeyaraman pointed out in the memorandum that with global warming, monsoons have become erratic; so there is a need to judiciously harness the surplus flow of flood water in Cauvery river especially during rainy seasons from August to December. An average of 50 TMC feet of water drains into the sea through Kollidam river during flood periods, he added.
The PWD identifies the spot at Marudur-Umayalpuram across the river Cauvery to build a barrage with two lane road and with shutters facilities for controlled release of stored flood water.
The barrage across Marudur-Umayalpuram can store two to three TMC of water at barrage site which will be useful for irrigation in an additional area of 44, 000 acres in Kulithalai, Musiri, Mannachanallur and Srirangam taluks through which more than 25,000 farmers and 50,000 farm workers / agricultural labourers will benefit directly and indirectly.
