Chennai: A 35-year-old man, wanted by the Andhra Pradesh Economic Offences Wing (EOW) for the past two years, was detained at Chennai International Airport in the early hours of Saturday while attempting to flee to Qatar.
The accused, identified as Varadaraju, a native of Andhra Pradesh, had arrived at the airport to board a Qatar Airways flight to Doha. During routine immigration checks, immigration officials scanned his passport and travel documents and found that a Look Out Circular (LOC) had been issued against him.
According to officials, the Andhra Pradesh EOW had registered a financial fraud case against Varadaraju around two years ago. He had subsequently remained absconding and was declared a wanted accused.
When the immigration system flagged the LOC during the document verification process, officials stopped Varadaraju from proceeding with his journey. His flight clearance was cancelled and he was taken to a separate room. The immigration authorities subsequently alerted the Andhra Pradesh EOW about his detention. A special team from the EOW is expected to arrive at Chennai airport to take custody of Varadaraju and escort him to Andhra Pradesh for further investigation.
