Alert Status in Namakkal Poultry Farms

Namakkal: Preventive disease-control measures have been intensified in poultry farms located in Namakkal district of Tamil Nadu due to the spread of Avian influenza in neighbouring Kerala.

In this situation, poultry farm owners in Namakkal district — which has a high concentration of poultry farms in Tamil Nadu — have intensified safety measures in their farms. Bio-security procedures in poultry farms have been strengthened and

vaccination was being administered to the chickens.

There are more than about 1,000 poultry farms in Namakkal, Salem, Erode and surrounding regions. More than 60 million egg-laying chickens are reared in these areas.

Vehicles are allowed inside the farms only after being sprayed with disinfectants.

Although an expert committee has stated that due to the prevailing climate conditions in the Namakkal region and the biosecurity methods followed in the farms, there was no chance of avian influenza germs spreading in Namakkal, poultry farm owners here are nevertheless intensifying precautionary measures.
