THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Renowned cardiologist and teacher Dr G. Vijayaraghavan passed away here on Sunday. He was 84.
A pioneer in his field, he was credited with setting up India’s first two-dimensional echocardiography lab. In 2009, he was honoured with the Padma Shri for his contributions to medical science. He also received Lifetime Achievement Awards from the Indian Academy of Echocardiography, the Indian College of Cardiology, and the Cardiological Society of India.
Born in Perumpuzha, Kollam district, on September 18, 1942, he was the son of Sahithya Shiromani M. K. Govindan, a noted Sanskrit scholar.
He finished his early schooling at Thiruvananthapuram Model School before earning his medical degree from Thiruvananthapuram Medical College in 1964. Vijayaraghavan started his academic career as an associate professor at CMC Vellore. In 1976, he returned to Thiruvananthapuram Medical College to continue his research on endomyocardial fibrosis, a heart disease commonly seen in Kerala, collaborating with the Post Graduate Medical School and Brompton Hospital in London.
Vijayaraghavan, the founder director and vice chairman of KIMSHEALTH, was remembered fondly by people from all walks of life. They paid heartfelt tributes to the legendary teacher, exceptional physician, and visionary who devoted his life to healing, teaching, and inspiring generations.
