BENGALURU: While congratulating voters of West Bengal in bringing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to power for maiden time in that State in the recent Assembly election believing its ideologies, Union Minister of Home Amit Shah on Saturday lauded former Chief Minister and Central Parliamentary Board member B.S. Yediyurappa brought BJP to power in south India at a time when things looked bleak for the party especially when BJP came into existence.

“Yediyurappa opened the doors for BJP by becoming Deputy Chief Minister and later on Chief Minister in 2008. A first BJP government in south India by BJP,” Shah pointed out.

Amit Shah, addressing the gathering to mark 50 years of B.S. Yediyurappa in public life at a function held in Chitradurga, attributed BJP’s success in south India in particular Karnataka to Yediyurappa’s efforts. Amit Shah said “What a coincidence (today). BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari took oath as Chief Minister of West Bengal while the day marks 50 years of public life by Yediyurappa.”

The Union Home Minister asked the youths in politics to emulate the life of Yediyurappa and termed Yediyurappa “a leader no one can match his stature in south India.”

“There is something for every youth to learn from the life of Yediyurppa who led a humble life although his political life spanning 5 decades,” Shah said on Yediyurappa and stated “There are two types of political leaders-one who follows the path already created while the ones such as Yediyurappa create their own path and allow others to go through it.”

Recalling the struggles of Yediyurappa, Shah said Yediyurappa strived hard to build the party in Karnataka and used to tour the State in State Transport buses and if buses were unavailable then he would take to bicycle to reach various destinations.

In politics, he said, Yediyurappa climbed to the top post of Chief Minister without having any political connections/background and Shah stated “Yediyurappa always abided by the party’s ideology (his success mantra).”

Through his struggle Bagair Hukum (regularization of lands), Shah said Yediyurappa instilled confidence among farmers and later became recognized as a “farmers leader.” Shah recalled contributions made by Yediyurappa as a Chief Minister and praised him for striving to bring harmony among various sections of the society.
