Udupi: Two Held For Allegedly Stealing Cattle For Slaughter

UDUPI: Hiriyadka police arrested two men and rescued four cattle, including a calf, after intercepting a goods vehicle allegedly carrying the animals stolen from Kukkaje in Karkala taluk for slaughter.
The police intercepted the vehicle near Anjar Junction in front of Hiriyadka police station on Friday evening.
According to the police, personnel received information around 7.30 pm that cattle were being transported illegally in a goods tempo from Harikandige towards Hiriyadka. A police team spotted the vehicle near Kotnakatte in Bommarabettu village and signalled the driver to stop. But the vehicle continued without stopping.
The police alerted Hiriyadka station and asked personnel there to intercept the vehicle. Head Constable Praveen Rai and Police Constable Channesha stopped it.
The two occupants were identified as Abdul Sattar of Kurkalu village, and Yogish Naik of Innanje village in Kaup taluk.
The men allegedly told the police that they had stolen the cattle while the animals were grazing near the house of Krishna Poojary, a resident of Palabettu in Kukkaje village, Karkala taluk. They were allegedly taking the animals to a slaughterhouse for sale.
The police said the cattle, estimated to be worth Rs 20,000, had been tied around their necks and legs with nylon ropes, causing them distress. The animals were allegedly being transported without the required permission in the goods vehicle.
Hiriyadka police registered a case against the two under Section 303(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Section 11(1)(d) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, and Sections 4, 5, 7 and 12 of the Karnataka Prevention of Slaughter and Preservation of Cattle Act.
The accused were produced before a court, which remanded them to judicial custody.
