Mangaluru: A gang of seven unidentified persons allegedly robbed about 180 grams of gold ornaments from a businessman from Maharashtra after intercepting his car near Surathkal in the early hours of Monday before fleeing with the victim's vehicle.

Vikas, a native of Sangli in Maharashtra, owns a jewellery shop in his home town. He was driving to Payyanur in Kerala in his car to attend a wedding. He was accompanied by his wife and 14-year-old son.

According to police, the incident occurred around 2.15 am near Hotel Dwara of Baikampady, about 12 km from Mangaluru. The accused, who came in an Innova, intercepted the vehicle and allegedly forced the occupants to stop.

According to sources, Vikas was pulled out of the car, and some in the Innova got down and drove the car away with Vikas’s wife and son still in the car. After about 2 km, they were dropped near Kuloor bridge. While they took away Rupali’s bag with about 180 gram of gold, they did not touch the chain that the woman was wearing.

“There are clues and teams are working on it,” City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy said.

A case of dacoity has been registered.
