Koppal: A 19-year-old college student was allegedly murdered by her 18-year-old younger brother, who also attacked his parents before attempting suicide at a village in Gangavathi taluk of Koppal district on Saturday night.
According to the FIR, the family had spent the evening together and retired to their respective rooms after dinner. At around 9.30 pm, the grandfather and grandmother of the accused heard loud screams and sounds of banging from their son's room.
When repeated knocks went unanswered, the grandfather and a neighbour broke open the door and entered the house. They found their son and daughter-in-law lying with severe bleeding injuries, while their 19-year-old granddaughter was found dead on a bed. Their 18-year-old grandson was also found injured.
The injured were shifted to the Government Hospital in Gangavathi and later referred to a hospital in Ballari for advanced treatment.
In his complaint, the grandfather stated that his daughter-in-law, while undergoing treatment, told family members that her son had suddenly become enraged, taken a knife from the house and attacked his sister. She further alleged that he then stabbed both his parents before inflicting injuries on himself.
Police said the girl had sustained multiple grievous injuries to her neck and head and died on the spot. The parents and the accused are under treatment.
Based on the complaint, Gangavathi Rural police registered a case under Sections 103 (murder) and 109 (attempt to murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and launched an investigation.
The motive behind the incident remains unclear, with investigators examining all possible angles, including whether the accused's alleged online gaming habit had any bearing on the incident.
