Konkan Railway inaugurated first polypropylene container rake

Mangaluru: Konkan Railway on Thursday inaugurated the first container rake of Polypropylene from Thokur station, located about 15 km from Mangaluru. This marks the commencement of a new stream of containerized traffic on the Konkan Railway network.

The launch is expected to encourage more industries to utilize the enhanced facilities and services available at Thokur station for storage and transportation of goods to and from the region.

The polypropylene being transported belongs to Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited (MRPL). On average, MRPL is expected to offer around two container rakes per month for transportation to Morbi in Rajasthan. The movement will be handled by the Central Warehousing Corporation (CWC) using container rakes owned by the corporation. For this purpose, MRPL and CWC have entered into a formal agreement to operationalise the logistics arrangement.

Konkan Railway Corporation Limited (KRCL), in association with CWC, has developed state-of-the-art infrastructure at Thokur station, including a paved wharf with approach roads, covered warehouses, open stack yards and other modern logistics facilities, transforming it into a fully equipped freight handling terminal capable of supporting containerised and other cargo traffic.

The first rake under this new traffic stream was flagged off by MRPL Managing Director Mundkur Shyamprasad Kamath, CWC Managing Director Santosh Sinha and KRCL Director (Commercial & Operations) Sunil Gupta. Senior officials from KRCL, MRPL, and CWC were also present on the occasion.
