Karnataka: Landslide Kills 3 Of A Family In Thirthahalli Of Shivamogga

BENGALURU: Owing to incessant rainfall lashing in Thirthahalli region, a retaining wall of 25-ft and 60 ft wide collapsed on a shed killing 3 persons of a family at Gandhi Nagar of ward 15 of Thirthahalli Town Panchayat of Shivamogga. The retaining wall collapsed owing to a landslide at around 3.30 am on Sunday and a person trapped under the debris was rescued by rescue personnel belonging to fire force and police. Even volunteers joined hands in the rescue operation.
Police gave the names of the deceased as Mallikarjun (30, his wife Nagaveni (25) and their 3-year-old son Santosh. A labourer Hanmanth was rescued by the rescued personnel before he was shifted to a hospital in Shivamogga city.
The family of Mallikarjun were native of Gangavathi, Koppal district and worked as labourers. The trapped bodies were retrieved by the rescue personnel after hours of operation to remove debris. The bodies were trapped under 15 ft rubble when they were recovered. Thirtahalli MLA and former minister Araga Jnanendra visited the spot and stated he spoke to Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar who assured compensation for the affected families.
The MLA said steps would be initiated to shift 10 families from the location and the displaced families will have to be relocated elsewhere providing them with housing facilities. An eyewitness stated “the rescued person from the rubble sustained injuries to one of his legs and shifted him to a hospital.” Over the rescued Hanmanth, an eyewitness stated rescue personnel swung into action at around 4 am and he was rescued at around 6. 30 am.”
