BENGALURU: Mysuru Dasara-2026 was inaugurated by Abhinava Gavisiddeshwara Swamiji of Koppal atop Chamundi Hill in Mysuru on Sunday while making an appeal to the State Government to initiate steps to conserve Rivers especially the major rivers-Cauvery, Krishna and Tungabhadra, lifeline of the State.

The festivities will end on October 21 with the jumbo savari where a designated tamed elephant will march carrying a 750-kg golden howdah with an idol of Chamundeshwari from Mysore Palace premises to Bannimantap through K.R. Circle, Sayyaji Rao road.

Addressing the gathering after inaugurating the festivities by showering flower petals on the Goddess Chamundeshwari, the presiding deity of Mysuru, the Swamiji expressed concerned over the future once these major rivers start to deplete and called upon the people to make efforts to strive for protection of territory, water and environment. “It will be appropriate to plant a sapling and nourish it which will be a significant step towards environment protection,” said the Swamji.

Pointing to the contribution made by Harekala Hajabba who constructed a school by selling fruits, the Swamiji asked people to derive inspiration from Hajabba and contribute towards developing schools in their villages/vicinity. The Swamiji termed “education laid a strong foundation for social progress.”

Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar spoke. Meanwhile, elaborate arrangements have been made in Mysuru city for the festivities including flower show at Kuppanna Garden, Food Mela at Maharaja’s College Grounds’, illumination of 146-km roads among others. Police have tightened security.

George inaugurated the illumination of the 146-km city road, a major crowd-puller during the festivities. The illumination of city roads will end on October 31.
