Karnataka Gets Extension To Hold Elections To 5 City Corporations
The elections to the newly formed City Corporations should be scheduled after the completion of SIR: Supreme Court
BENGALURU: Taking into consideration the ongoing Special Intensive Revision of Electoral Rolls in Karnataka, the Supreme Court on Friday directed the State Government to hold elections to 5 City Corporations under the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) by December this year. Earlier the Supreme Court had set a deadline of August 31 to conduct elections to 5 City Corporations under GBA.
The Court said the elections to newly formed City Corporations should be scheduled after the completion of SIR, which is expected to be completed in November.
A bench ordered “In view of the fact that Karnataka is having SIR and the process will be completed in November, it is directed that elections of all five City Corporations be held in December 2026.” Senior Advocate representing Karnataka Kapil Sibal made a request to the Court and responding to the request, the Court passed the order.
In New Delhi, Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar told reporters, “The Supreme Court was approached seeking time till December 31 to conduct elections to City Corporations owing to ongoing Special Intensive Revision of Electoral Rolls and the Court granted the extension.”
Over elections to Zilla Panchayat, Shivakumar said, elections to gram panchayats and municipal local bodies are expected to be completed by March.
