Mangaluru: Seven fishermen from Andhra Pradesh had a narrow escape after the country boat on which they had ventured for fishing capsized after being struck by a wave off the coast at Doddakopla near Surathkal Lighthouse, about 15 km from Manglauru on Friday morning.

According to sources, the fishermen, all natives of Andhra Pradesh, had ventured out for fishing from Malpe in Udupi district in the country boat Durg Krupa, owned by a local boat owner.

Officials told Deccan Chronicle that the fishermen had set out from Malpe earlier in the day for fishing when the incident occurred about 500 metres from the shore at Doddakopla near Surathkal Lighthouse. A huge wave reportedly hit the boat, throwing all seven occupants into the sea around 10 am.

The fishermen have been identified as Nagaraj (32), Balaraj (32), Annavaram (30), Taju (26), Jyothi (24), Tataji (45), and Pentayya (55).

Despite being thrown into the water, all seven managed to swim towards the shore. Local fishermen, who noticed the incident, are said to have rushed to their assistance.

No casualties or serious injuries were reported.

The capsized boat was later towed to Kulai Jetty with the help of other boats and pulled ashore.
