Dharwad: Noted Psychiatrist Dr Anand Pandurangi Dies at 74
He began his professional career in Dharwad in 1984 and went on to make a significant contribution to mental healthcare in North Karnataka.
Dharwad: Noted psychiatrist and author Dr Anand Pandurangi (74), died at SDM Hospital in Dharwad on Thursday after suffering a cardiac arrest.
He had been undergoing treatment at a private hospital but died after he failed to respond to treatment, family sources said.
A native of Haveri, Dr Pandurangi was a resident of Michigan Compound in Saptapur, Dharwad.
He completed his MBBS at the Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS), Hubballi, and pursued a postgraduate diploma in psychiatric medicine at Karnatak University, Dharwad.
Dr Anand Pandurangi was a household name in north Karnataka, not only for his clinical prowess in psychiatry and community based therapeutic approach but also for his philanthropic activities in the community.
Dr Anand Pandurangi has his graduation in medicine from Karnataka Medical College, Hubli, and post-graduate honours from Karnataka University, Dharwad, acquiring his clinical skills training from the erstwhile Karnataka Institute of Mental Health, Dharwad.
He later honed his skills working with Dr.B.M.Debsikdar, an illustrious psychiatrist, at Miraj.
He began his professional career in Dharwad in 1984 and went on to make a significant contribution to mental healthcare in North Karnataka.
Apart from Dharwad, he established treatment centres in Haveri, Gadag, Karwar and Kumta. He was known for his efforts to address the stigma, fear and misconceptions surrounding mental illness.
He is the recipient of various awards and honours like the Karnataka Rajyotsava award, Dr B C Roy award and Honorary doctorate from Karnataka University.
He is survived by his wife Anupama Pandurangi, son Dr Aditya Pandurangi and daughter-in-law Dr Swapna Pandurangi.
