BALLARI: Police and Food Department officials busted an alleged illegal Public Distribution System (PDS) rice transportation racket in Ballari district and seized over 22 tonnes of rice along with a lorry.
The raid was carried out near Badanahatti village in Kurugodu police station limits after police received information about illegal storage and transportation of ration rice.
According to police, Yashaswami alias Yashankar Gowda and Umesh alias Umashankar, both residents of Kurugodu, had allegedly stocked PDS rice bags at Nandi Layout on Yallapur Road and were loading them into a truck for transportation.
The consignment was allegedly meant to be transported to Veerabhadra and Vinod, both residents of Manvi.
A joint team led by Kurugodu PSI Supreeth V, along with police personnel Shivarayappa, Pakkirappa and Ramachandra and Food Inspector Mallikarjun P, conducted the raid and seized 22.10 tonnes of ration rice worth Rs 5.52 lakh. Police also seized the lorry used for transportation, valued at around Rs 10 lakh.
A case has been registered at Kurugodu police station under Sections 3, 7 and 6(A) of the Essential Commodities Act, and further investigation is in progress, police added.
