VMC Steps Up Sanitation, Sewage Control Amid Rains

VIJAYAWADA: The Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) has stepped up sanitation and sewage management measures across the city following recent rains, while repair works are under way at a drainage pumping station serving several residential and institutional areas.
VMC commissioner H.M. Dhyanachandra said the pumping station carrying sewage from Veterinary Colony to the Autonagar STP had developed a technical problem and was being temporarily shut down for repairs. The restoration work is expected to take around 24 hours.
The temporary shutdown could result in sewage backflow and overflow of the underground drainage system in Venkateswara Rao Nagar, ESI Hospital Junction, Veterinary Colony, NTR Colony and areas surrounding the Government General Hospital.
As a precaution, gully pits have been arranged in the affected areas to prevent sewage from spilling onto roads. Engineering personnel are continuously monitoring the situation and taking measures to regulate sewage flow and minimise inconvenience to residents, the commissioner said.
Meanwhile, sanitation works were taken up on Saturday in Dornakal Road, Prakasam Road, IGMC Stadium, Red Circle and Latha Super Speciality Hospital Road. Sanitation workers removed silt and waste accumulated in drains following the rains and took steps to prevent waterlogging.
The civic body also focused on clearing drains to ensure smooth flow of rainwater and maintaining cleanliness along major roads and routes leading to hospitals.
Commissioner Dhyanachandra directed officials to maintain continuous surveillance of the underground drainage system and sanitation arrangements across the city and take immediate corrective measures wherever required.
Officials warned that stagnant water during the rainy season could create mosquito breeding grounds and increase the risk of diseases. Residents were urged to prevent water stagnation around their premises and cooperate with the VMC in maintaining cleanliness.
