Vizag’s Fishermen Mark Bhagat Singh's Birth Anniversary

VISAKHAPATNAM: Shaheed Bhagat Singh's 119th birth anniversary was celebrated at Peda Jalaripeta on Sunday, with fishermen, youth and children taking part in a range of cultural, literary and sporting events organised by the Navjawan Bharat Sabha and the Shaheed Bhagat Singh Library.
The celebrations commemorated the life and ideals of Bhagat Singh, one of India's most revered freedom fighters. Speakers at the event said Bhagat Singh's vision of a society free from exploitation and inequality continued to inspire generations.
Naujawan Bharat Sabha coordinator N Sujan said Bhagat Singh dreamt of a society where no individual could exploit another and where equality and justice prevailed. He remarked that the ideals for which Bhagat Singh fought remained relevant even now. He stressed that every child should have access to free, quality education and urged people to strive to realise this right.
APTF teachers' movement leader Venkatapathi Raju, as the chief guest, said Bhagat Singh's life was an example of courage, social commitment and intellectual inquiry. He encouraged youngsters to develop a questioning attitude and actively participate in social causes.
As part of the celebrations, children presented a play highlighting the importance of questioning and scientific thinking. Revolutionary songs penned by noted poet Sri Sri were rendered, while fishermen and residents joined in singing popular inspirational songs, including ‘Aa Challani Samudra Garbham’ penned by Krishnamacharyulu Dasarathi and ‘Tu Zinda Hai Tu Zindagi Ki Jeet Par Yakeen Kar’, penned by Salil Chowdhury.
Sports and games competitions conducted for fishermen and children of Peda Jalaripeta witnessed enthusiastic participation. Tug-of-war competitions drew large crowds, with participants displaying team spirit and competitive zeal. Venkatapathi Raju presented prizes to the winners.
Residents said such events help keep alive the legacy of leaders like Bhagat Singh and provide opportunities for community bonding. Participants also highlighted the role of the Shaheed Bhagat Singh Library in encouraging children to seek knowledge, develop scientific temper and find answers through reading, discussion and inquiry.
