VISAKHAPATNAM: Visakhapatnam is poised to elect its third woman mayor, with young residents being hopeful that the incoming leadership would address the city’s civic challenges.

The Mayor post for GVMC is reserved for Women from the general category. Major political parties, including the TD and the YSRC, have fielded women candidates, setting the stage for another woman to lead the corporation.

For the city’s youth, the election carries expectations beyond representation. Young residents say employment generation, better infrastructure, traffic management, environmental protection and digital governance should be priorities. They also want greater public engagement and a more responsive civic administration.

Visakhapatnam’s first woman mayor, Rajana Ramani of the Congress, functioned during the undivided AP era. Her tenure increased visibility for women in municipal leadership at a time when their representation was limited.

The city’s second woman mayor, Golagani Hari Venkata Kumari of the YSRC, assumed office after the 2021 GVMC elections. She focused her attention on civic infrastructure, sanitation and urban development.
