Vizag MP Seeks Tougher Pollution Curbs in Port Areas

VISAKHAPATNAM: Visakhapatnam MP M. Sribharat has urged Union minister for ports, shipping and waterways Sarbananda Sonowal to strengthen pollution control measures in the city's port areas and expedite the implementation of green port initiatives.
During a meeting in New Delhi, Sribharat submitted a representation highlighting the need for time-bound measures to tackle pollution arising from port operations. He said Visakhapatnam's bowl-shaped topography restricts the dispersion of airborne pollutants, making the city particularly vulnerable to dust and particulate matter.
The MP referred to a high-level review meeting held at the Visakhapatnam Collectorate on July 10, where officials from the Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board, district administration, Visakhapatnam Port Authority, Adani Gangavaram Port and other stakeholders reviewed dust pollution caused during cargo handling and transportation.
While acknowledging measures already taken by port operators, including mechanised cargo handling, fog cannons, sprinkler systems, HDPE cargo covers, tyre-washing facilities and green buffer zones, Sribharat said public concerns over pollution persist.
He urged the Centre to expedite the implementation of the Harit Sagar – Green Port Guidelines, 2023, complete the mechanisation of dust-intensive bulk cargo handling, and mandate enclosed conveyor systems, scientific cargo storage, automated dust suppression systems and wind barriers at all port terminals.
The MP also proposed a Standard Operating Procedure for dust-free bulk cargo handling and an environmental accountability framework with measurable performance indicators, quarterly compliance reports, real-time public air quality data, annual third-party audits and stricter enforcement against violations.
He further sought the installation of additional Continuous Ambient Air Quality Monitoring Stations, drone-based surveillance, public digital air quality dashboards and quarterly environmental review meetings involving all key agencies.
Stressing Visakhapatnam's strategic importance as a major port city, Sribharat said industrial growth and port-led development should not come at the cost of public health or environmental sustainability.
