Two Sent To 14-day Judicial Remand In Medico Hit-and-run Case

Kakinada: A court in Rajamahendravaram on Friday remanded two accused to 14 days' judicial custody until August 21 in connection with the road accident in which two medical students were seriously injured.

Prakash Nagar police produced the accused, Suravarapu Dashwant and Andrew Joseph Edward, before the court. Circle Inspector R.S.K. Bajilal said the remand was granted till August 21.

He said Priyanka, who sustained critical injuries, was undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Hyderabad and remained in a critical condition on Friday night. Police were closely monitoring her condition.

According to police, Priyanka and her friend Umesh were returning on a two-wheeler after watching a film on August 3 when a car allegedly driven by an intoxicated driver rammed their vehicle. Police alleged that the car hit the two-wheeler multiple times before running over Priyanka. She was initially admitted to a private hospital in Rajamahendravaram before being shifted to Hyderabad for advanced treatment.

Prakash Nagar police registered a case and arrested the two accused.

Students of Rajamahendravaram Women's College staged a protest march expressing solidarity with Priyanka and demanding stringent punishment for the accused.

Dy CM Condemns Hit-and-run Case

Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan condemned the incident and directed the Eluru Range Inspector General of Police to ensure stringent action against those responsible. He also enquired about the condition of the injured students.

Meanwhile, opposition leaders criticised the police over the sections invoked in the case. Former MP and YSRC leader Margani Bharat alleged that weaker sections had been applied and demanded that a murder case be registered against the accused.

Congress leader T.K. Visweswara Reddy also condemned the incident and called for stricter regulation of liquor shops and illegal belt shops.
