Tirupati: The Srivari Vaidya Seva programme is strengthening specialist services at Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences (SVIMS) by bringing experienced doctors from outside the institution to treat patients and share their expertise with medical teams.

Surgical oncologist Dr Hari Shankar B.G.V. provided specialist services at the SVIMS Surgical Oncology department for three days, examining patients and advising them on cancer surgery and treatment plans.

Dr Hari Shankar is an assistant professor of surgical oncology at Panimalar Medical College Hospital and Research Institute, Chennai, and a consultant surgical oncologist at Dr Mehta’s Multispeciality Hospital. He specialises in endoscopic and minimally invasive cancer surgery.

SVIMS director and vice-chancellor Dr G. Jagadeesh said the visit gave doctors, residents and postgraduate students exposure to newer surgical techniques and treatment practices.

“The aim is to bring the experience of specialist doctors to patients, particularly those from poor families, while also strengthening the expertise available at SVIMS,” he said.

Dr Jagadeesh appealed to Indian and NRI doctors working abroad to volunteer through the programme. He said their participation would benefit both patients and SVIMS medical staff and students.

The programme covers cardiology, neurology, oncology, neurosurgery, orthopaedics, nephrology, urology and gastroenterology, among other specialties.
