SVIMS To Open Paediatric ICU Shortly For Treating Critical Children In Tirupati
SVIMS Tirupati will soon open an eight-bed Paediatric ICU with SBI support to provide emergency and intensive care to critically ill children.
Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences (Svims), Tirupati, will be opening shortly a dedicated Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) to provide intensive, emergency care, along with respiratory support, to critically ill children.
The eight-bed PICU has been established at Svims’s Sri Padmavathi Medical College for Women with the State Bank of India (SBI) extending ₹52 lakh as financial support. The intensive care unit has four multi-parameter monitors, a paediatric ventilator, a High-Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC), a defibrillator, an ECG machine, and a crash cart. The monitors will enable doctors and nurses to continuously track vital parameters, including heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, and respiratory status of the child.
The ventilator and HFNC will provide respiratory support to children with severe breathing problems, while the defibrillator, ECG machine, and crash cart will help the medical team respond to cardiac and other emergencies.
The PICU will cater to children with severe infections, respiratory failure, sepsis and septic shock, neurological emergencies, poisoning, cardiac emergencies, postoperative complications and other conditions requiring intensive care.
Svims director and vice chancellor Dr G. Jagadish said critically ill children could deteriorate rapidly without immediate intervention and continuous monitoring. The dedicated PICU would provide an environment where children could receive respiratory support, emergency medication, and resuscitation whenever required.
Dr Jagadish said the facility would reduce delays in treatment and avoidable transfers of unstable children to other hospitals. In critical cases, timely intervention during the initial minutes can be important in improving the chances of recovery, he pointed out.
The director said doctors and nursing personnel would require continuous training in paediatric resuscitation, ventilator management, and treatment of sepsis and shock. The PICU would have support from the departments of Paediatrics, Emergency Medicine, Anaesthesia, Radiology, Laboratory Medicine and Blood Bank.
Dr Jagadish thanked the SBI for its ₹52 lakh financial support towards establishing the facility.
