VIJAYAWADA: The state government has decided to sell onions at a subsidised price of ₹35 a kg through all Rythu Bazaars in Vijayawada from Wednesday to contain the recent rise in onion prices.
Agriculture minister Kinjarapu Atchannaidu and Civil Supplies minister Nadendla Manohar said the initiative would initially be implemented across all Rythu Bazaars in Vijayawada. Each family can purchase up to 2 kg of onions a month at ₹35 a kg by producing an Aadhaar or ration card.
The ministers said the government was regularly reviewing market conditions and taking measures to protect consumers from the additional financial burden caused by rising prices of essential commodities. The subsidised onion sale was aimed at providing immediate relief to consumers, they said.
The government would consider extending the initiative to Rythu Bazaars across the state based on public response and demand in Vijayawada, the ministers said.
They urged people to make use of the facility. The move comes amid concerns over rising onion prices and is aimed at ensuring that the essential kitchen staple remains affordable.
