Visakhapatnam: Around 320 electric poles were uprooted, 31 transformers damaged and nearly 20 km of power lines affected in North Andhra due to recent heavy rain, thunderstorms and strong winds, according to Andhra Pradesh Eastern Power Distribution Company Limited (APEPDCL).
APEPDCL chairman and managing director Prithvi Tej Immadi said restoration works are under way across several districts after adverse weather caused widespread damage to electricity infrastructure.
Officials said the affected districts include Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Parvathipuram Manyam, Visakhapatnam, Dr B.R. Ambedkar Konaseema, Anakapalli and East Godavari.
Strong winds uprooted trees that fell on power lines, damaging poles and snapping conductors, resulting in disruption of electricity supply.
The department said 41 poles were damaged in Srikakulam district, while 279 poles were uprooted in Anakapalli and Jaggampeta divisions. In addition, 31 transformers and about 20 km of electricity lines were damaged in multiple areas.
Special teams comprising departmental and contract staff have been deployed for restoration work using cranes, tractors and pole-drilling equipment.
Officials said restoration is being carried out on a war footing and urged the public to avoid fallen power lines and report hazards through helpline 1912 or nearby electricity offices.
