Nellore:A 68-year-old woman, the mother-in-law of a police sub-inspector, was allegedly strangled to death by unidentified assailants who broke into her house and decamped with gold jewellery at Tufan Nagar in Kavali on Thursday, sending shockwaves through the town.

The deceased was identified as Ponguluri Vijayalakshmi, alias Veeramm, 68, mother-in-law of an SI working at Kavali. She was living alone at Bairagula Veedhi in Tufan Nagar.

According to police, the assailants entered the house when she was alone, strangled her and allegedly smothered her with a pillow after throwing her to the floor. They reportedly escaped with the gold chain, bangles and earrings she was wearing, besides around 2.5 tolas of gold ornaments kept in a bureau.

On receiving information, Kavali DSP V.V. Ramana Kumar reached the scene and supervised the investigation. Police suspect that the assailants wore gloves. A blouse found near the house was also reportedly seized as part of the investigation.

The body was shifted to the Kavali Area Hospital for post-mortem. Kavali II Town police registered a case and launched an investigation.

Police are examining CCTV footage from surrounding areas to identify and trace the suspects.
