NELLORE: The second additional district court in Ongole on Thursday sentenced Valeti Veeranjaneyulu, 32, of Vengamukkalapalem village, to 10 years’ rigorous imprisonment and a fine of ₹50,000 for raping a woman after allegedly promising to marry her.

According to police, Veeranjaneyulu, along with his father, had approached the victim’s parents before July 28, 2020, assuring them that he would marry her. He later allegedly went to her workplace, gained her confidence and sexually assaulted her several times before refusing to marry her.

Following a complaint by the victim, the then Ongole DSP M. Dhanunjayudu conducted the investigation, arrested the accused and filed a charge sheet. The prosecution, led by special public prosecutor Nalluri Avaneesh, produced the witnesses before the court. A special monitoring team constituted under the guidance of Prakasam SP V. Harshavardhan Raju supervised the trial.

Finding the accused guilty, judge Pandiri Lalitha awarded the 10-year jail term and ₹50,000 fine.

The SP appreciated the then DSP Dhanunjayudu, special public prosecutor Avaneesh and court liaison staff for their effective efforts in securing the conviction. He said those committing atrocities against women would not be allowed to escape the law.
