Kurnool: A financial irregularity involving Rs 74 lakh has been detected at a petrol bunk operated by the prisons department in Banaganapalle of Nandyal district, officials said.

The alleged fraud came to light during a recent audit of the petrol bunk’s financial transactions. Preliminary findings indicated that funds collected through digital payment platforms were allegedly diverted to a personal account.

According to officials, head warder Ramachandra Reddy, who had been managing the petrol bunk, is alleged to have routed customer payments, particularly those made through PhonePe, to his private account instead of the official account over the past year.

The discrepancy was identified during scrutiny of transaction records, following which a detailed inquiry was initiated.

Based on the audit findings, department officials lodged a complaint with the Banaganapalle police.

Police have registered a case and begun an investigation into the allegations. Officials said further details would emerge after completion of the probe.
