ONGOLE: A special lift facility costing Rs 43 lakh was inaugurated at the Prakasam district collectorate on Wednesday to improve accessibility for persons with disabilities and senior citizens.

State social welfare and differently abled and senior citizens welfare minister Dr Dola Sri Bala Veeranjaneyaswamy said the facility, established under the SIPDA scheme, would help visitors avoid difficulties in reaching the upper floors.

The 13-person-capacity lift has a dedicated ramp for wheelchair users. The project was executed by APMSIDC, Ongole, with Rs 23.50 lakh released in the first phase.

The minister said around 28,500 persons with disabilities had been identified in the district and steps were being taken to provide assistive devices to 15,000 needy beneficiaries in phases.

He said the government was also providing free bus travel under the Divyang Shakti scheme, besides pensions of Rs 6,000 for persons with disabilities and Rs 15,000 for those completely bedridden.

The facility was inaugurated by the minister along with collector P. Rajababu, Ongole MLA D. Janardhana Rao, Santhanuthalapadu MLA B.N. Vijay Kumar and joint collector K. Kalpana Kumari.
