Raymond’s Tomb Set For Revival With Conservation Works

HYDERABAD: After decades of neglect, Raymond’s tomb, the memorial of French military commander Michel Joachim Marie Raymond on Asmangadh Hillock in Malakpet, is set to regain its glory as the Heritage department has initiated conservation measures.
To improve the precinct and its surroundings, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) is undertaking landscaping and environmental works, including pathways, greenery, cleaning and circulation areas. Visitor amenities, signage and ambience improvements are also being added.
Heritage department director Prof. K. Arjun Rao said the works were being carried out with due regard to the historic character. “Landscaping and visitor facilities are intended to complement the structures and improve accessibility without compromising heritage,” he said.
The monument had remained closed to visitors following anti‑social incidents and security lapses.
Raymond’s tomb is the resting place of Michel Joachim Marie Raymond, who served in the army of Nizam Ali Khan, Asaf Jah II. He was held in esteem by the local population and became popularly known as “Musa Ram” and “Musa Rahim.”
The precinct includes the black‑stone obelisk bearing the initials “JR,” the pillared memorial pavilion and associated structures. It reflects Hyderabad’s military, architectural and cultural history and its links with France.
On completion of the current works, the department will take up restoration of the heritage structure, with the precinct expected to provide visitors an improved setting to understand Raymond’s legacy.
