Rains Help Fill AP’s Major Reservoirs With Water

The current storage of water at Srisailam project is 209.16 TMC feet (96.92 per cent) against gross capacity at FRL of 215.81 TMC feet. Nearly 1.17 lakh cusecs of water is being discharged from the Srisailam project.

Vijayawada: All major reservoirs in Andhra Pradesh are getting filled with water following rainfall in their catchment areas in the last few days. This has resulted in the current storage of water recorded on Wednesday in AP reaching 676.95 TMC feet (67.3 per cent), against last year’s storage at 271.22 TMC feet (27.01 per cent).

The current storage of water at Srisailam project is 209.16 TMC feet (96.92 per cent) against gross capacity at FRL of 215.81 TMC feet. Nearly 1.17 lakh cusecs of water is being discharged from the Srisailam project.

The current storage at Nagarjunasagar project is 261.59 TMC feet (83.83 per cent) against gross capacity at FRL of 312.05 TMC feet. Over 7,500 cusecs of water is being discharged.

Pulichintala project has current storage of 19.66 TMC feet (42.95 per cent) against gross capacity at FRL of 45.77 TMC feet. Prakasam barrage has water to its brim, with current storage of 3.08 TMC feet against the FRL of the same quantity. Nearly 13,000 cusecs of water is being discharged from the barrage.

Sir Arthur Cotton barrage at Dowleswaram too has water to its brim, with current storage of 2.93 TMC feet against the FRL of the same quantity. Nearly 2.50 lakh cusecs of water had been discharged from the barrage till Wednesday night.

As the water level at Bhadrachalam is rising due to rainfall locally, it is expected that the water level at Cotton barrage will rise further. In the earlier spell of rainfall, the Cotton barrage discharged nearly 6.50 lakh cusecs of water.

Somasila reservoir in Nellore has 27.52 TMC feet of water (35.28 per cent) against the FRL of 298 TMC feet. Likewise, levels at other major and medium projects are less than 50 per cent.

Nagarjunasagar project superintendent engineer P. Krishna Mohan said, “We are releasing nearly 500 cusecs of water for the first time this season from the Nagarjunasagar Dam to the Right Canal. As the water level is continuing to rise, we will release more water for cultivation of crops during Kharif season in parts of AP.”

Similarly, Krishna River conservator R. Ravi Kiran said, “We are getting inflows of 19,393 cusecs of water. We lifted 20 gates by one feet and released 18,061 cusecs of water, 3,821 cusecs of which is going into canals.”
