Police in Palnadu, Guntur and Bapatla districts have stepped up security for Diwali and warned against the unauthorised manufacture, storage and sale of fireworks. They also urged people to follow safety precautions while celebrating the festival.

Palnadu SP Jagadish Adahalli greeted people and advised them to use green crackers, supervise children and keep buckets of water and sand ready. He asked people not to burst crackers near electric poles, transformers, huts and vehicles. He also urged them to avoid loud fireworks near hospitals, senior citizens, sick people, infants and animals.

For emergencies, people can contact the police through Dial 112 or 9440796184, or the fire service on 101. Police patrols and security arrangements have been intensified across the district.

Guntur SP Vakul Jindal warned that unauthorised manufacture, storage or sale of fireworks would invite action under the Explosives Act. Traders must obtain licences, operate from designated sites and comply with fire-safety norms. Surprise inspections would be conducted, he said. Complaints can be lodged through Dial 112 or at the nearest police station. The identities of informants would be kept confidential.

Bapatla SP B. Uma Maheswar advised people to buy crackers only from licensed shops and follow the instructions on the packages. He cautioned against bursting crackers indoors or in glass bottles and metal containers, and said partly burnt crackers should not be relit.

Children should burst crackers only under adult supervision and remain at a safe distance, he said. Emergency assistance is available on 8333813228 or 112.

Meanwhile, the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation organised a fire-safety awareness programme for traders at Eenadu Grounds near Benz Circle. Fire officials said shops must be at least three metres apart and equipped with drums of water, sand buckets and fire extinguishers before being allowed to operate.

Fireworks shops have been permitted at Eenadu Grounds, Sitara Grounds and Makkineni Basavapunnaiah Stadium. A fire engine will be stationed at each sale area.
