Vijayawada: The Vijayawada Municipal Corporation’s (VMC) “Operation Clean Sweep” sanitation drive is progressing with strong public support, municipal commissioner H.M. Dhyana Chandra said on Tuesday.

The commissioner inspected sanitation works at Suryaraopet, Governorpet, Bhavanipuram (Swathi Theatre Centre) and HB Colony, reviewing ongoing cleanliness measures across the city. He also participated in the programme held at MP Das Street near Swathi Theatre in Bhavanipuram.

Addressing residents and sanitation workers, Dhyana Chandra said the campaign, launched on the direction of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, has received “overwhelming response” from citizens. He noted that the initiative is being implemented across all 64 municipal divisions with the support of voluntary organisations, resident welfare associations and terrace garden groups.

He appreciated public participation, stating that community involvement is easing the burden on sanitation staff while significantly improving urban hygiene standards in Vijayawada.

Later, the commissioner inspected the Anna Canteen at HB Colony and reviewed sanitation, drinking water supply, air coolers and shaded queue arrangements for visitors. He directed officials to ensure proper maintenance and public convenience at all times.

He further instructed nodal officers to conduct regular inspections of Anna Canteens and ensure there are no lapses in facilities or services, stressing that all amenities must remain fully functional during the summer to avoid inconvenience to the public.

Officials including chief medical and health officer Dr K. Arjuna Rao, deputy city planner Chandrabose, executive engineer J. Srinivas and assistant medical and health officer Dr Annapurna accompanied the commissioner during the visit.
