Officials Up Vigil Against Illegal Animal Slaughter Ahead of Bakrid
Special inspection teams have been formed across the district, while awareness programmes on animal welfare laws will also be conducted.
Nellore:Ahead of Bakrid celebrations, the SPSR Nellore district administration has directed officials to strictly enforce animal welfare laws and intensify checks against illegal slaughter and transportation of animals.
District collector Himanshu Shukla and SP Dr Ajitha Vejendla reviewed preparedness during a coordination meeting with officials of the animal husbandry, police, municipal, transport and revenue departments on Monday.
The collector instructed that animal slaughter be carried out only in licensed slaughterhouses after certification by veterinary doctors. He stressed strict enforcement of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, municipal laws and food safety regulations.
He clarified that slaughter of cows, calves below three years and camels is prohibited and warned of stringent action against illegal slaughter and unauthorised transportation of cattle.

Dr Ajitha Vejendla said eight special check-posts would be established at key locations, including V. Satram, Buchi and Musunuru toll plazas, besides Marripadu and Chillakuru.
She added that 32 police pickets would be deployed in sensitive areas of Nellore city to maintain law and order during Bakrid celebrations.
